Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay

The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region is one of our favourite winter destinations. My husband Philip and I are planning on taking several weekends off and a week of vacation to go to Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay and Parc national des Monts-Valin. These getaways as a couple are great sources of fun, a time to enjoy ice fishing and other activities. But above all else, it’s the infinite stretch of grandiose landscapes that fascinates us most.

Ice Fishing: Our Little Treat

We love setting foot on the ice that covers Éternité Bay starting in late January to go fishing. At Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay, our experience is even easier thanks to the shuttle service that takes us to the fishing area. And the park’s package with accommodations includes this service, as well as a heated fishing hut and fishing gear.

This year, we are going to explore the Baie-Sainte-Marguerite sector, located on the north side of the fjord. It’s the first time ever that 21 kilometres (13 miles) of trails will be open to hikers in the winter. We plan on making the most of this long hike on the Fjord trail. During a three-day hike with one night’s accommodation in a rustic camp and the second in a yurt, we look forward to seeing the magnificent sunset over the fjord again. Also, it is possible to have our bags transported from one site to the next, so we can travel light.

Off to Parc national des Monts-Valin

Heading to Parc national des Monts-Valin is letting yourself be taken by some fifteen peaks of which the largest is 980 metres (3,215 feet) tall. This is a perfect destination for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. I must confess… the site has often set the stage for some of our best memories.

Short hikes can also be organised here. The daily shuttle service makes it possible for us to access several distant sectors that are home to most exceptional points of view. I love Fantômes Valley, whereas Philip prefers Dubuc and Hutte peaks. Along the way, we like stopping at one of the heated shelters to enjoy a snack. Fantastic!

And I’ve been thinking about adding a little spice to our stay at Parc national des Monts-Valin. The park now has new partners offering other activities so we can complete our experience. We might go downhill skiing at the Valinouët resort or savour relaxation at Éternel Spa to finish our magnificent stay in beauty.
