It has been 15 years now! Fifteen years since I took to the sky, and I remember it like it was yesterday! My first hot air balloon flight at the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival! Perhaps these wonderful memories have come floating back to the surface because the festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In any case, it has inspired me to propose a trip to Gatineau so you can take part in this lovely event, held from August 31 to September 2.
My First Flight… and That of the Montgolfier Brothers!
I have extraordinary memories of my trips to the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival. As I lived in the region for several years, I had the occasion to go this festival more than once to admire the giants in the sky and take part in the event’s activities and shows. Unsurprisingly, my best memory is still the morning flight that helped me conquer my fear of heights and my vertigo as I wondrously admired the region from on high. Everything ran smoothly, from take-off to landing, including the flight itself, during which I felt like I was floating. If you wish to try your first hot air balloon flight like I did, it is possible to do so for approximately $200; you can book your spot on the festival’s website.
As I looked over the program for the 25th edition, I was happy to see that there are tons of special activities being offered this year. Among others, you can relive the flight from June 4, 1783 of the first paper hot air balloon made by the Montgolfier brothers, thanks to a historical reconstitution. Some 80 participants dressed in period costumes will take part in this majestic show, which will be given daily throughout the festival, at 5:45 p.m.

In the spirit of celebrating this anniversary as one should, the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival is kicking off its festivities on August 31 with a great mega-disco concert! KC and the Sunshine Band were asked to come get the crowds dancing to great classics from the 1970s. Festival goers are also invited to dig up their best disco clothes from among moth balls to come pay tribute to this mythical group which also has something to celebrate… 40 years of history in 2013!
