Find out more about the history of this hotel that never ceases to amaze and impress! Throughout the decades, the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac has left its mark thanks to its prestige, storied past, beauty and forward-thinking initiatives.

Preserving heritage

This year sees the beginning of a foundation that will showcase the rich history of the Château Frontenac, which has been a part of Québec City’s cultural, financial and political landscape and tourism industry since it opened.

From February 7 to April 2, 2019, the foundation will be showing an exhibition dedicated to the visit to the Château Frontenac by Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco. This free exhibition will be presented to the public in the hotel’s grand hall and will feature the princess’s iconic outfits, including the famous dress she wore to the Regency Ball at the Quebec Winter Carnival in February 1969. Photos from the archives will be placed alongside the outfits to trace back that exceptional visit to Québec City.

Immortalized beauty

What could be better than a book to pay tribute to the beauty of the Château Frontenac and Old Québec City? Renowned historian David Mendel has launched a brand new book Le Château Frontenac: in the heart of Old Quebec, where he positions the world’s most photographed hotel at the center of his explorations of the city. The book takes a historical look at the charming Château and the neighbouring heritage buildings as it guides the reader through a discovery of the old district. It is available for purchase at the hotel’s gift shop and put at guests’ disposal in all of the Fairmont Gold suites and rooms.

A legacy of environmental sustainability

Always concerned about employing eco-friendly practices, the Château is proud to announce the beginning of a partnership with Université Laval that will allow it to go carbon neutral and improve its existing “Château Boréal” tree-planting program implemented in 2016. By planting even more trees, the Château Frontenac seeks to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions produced as part of its daily operations. In addition to being “green key” certified by the Hotel Association of Canada, the hotel also takes part in Fairmont’s brand-wide Planet 21 green initiative.
