An architectural emblem of Montreal since Expo 67, the Biosphere is a spectacular place to discover. Located at the heart of Parc Jean-Drapeau and easily accessible by metro, this building sheltered under the geodesic dome designed by Buckminster Fuller is now used for the showcasing of human creativity in the face of global environmental change. The 12 exhibitions inside are an invitation to discuss culture, social innovation and the environment.

Refocus, reflect…become an eco-citizen

A single visit to the Biosphere should be enough to give you hope in the inventive spirit of humanity and in the extraordinary resilience of the natural world at a time when the Anthropocene is taking up more and more space in our collective minds. Described by some as a "new geological age", the Anthropocene is characterized by the major impact of human activity on nature’s equilibrium, and unfortunately, by the common sentiment that environmental activism is pointless. But think again! Your visit in and of itself will be thought-provoking, and inquisitiveness is one of the first conditions for the development of eco-citizenship!

New exhibitions on the agenda

For its brand-new permanent exhibition, MTL+, the Biosphere called on 14 architecture firms to imagine Montreal in the year 2067. MTL+ is a presentation of these 14 projects on how to reuse major infrastructure. Are the projects realistic or Utopian? You will be the judge of that! One thing is certain, though: the solutions will inspire you! Inaugurated last May, Oceans is an exhibition of giant photographs that highlight the richness and beauty of Canada’s marine environments. Water frontiers is another temporary photo exhibit launched back in the spring; it focusses on the importance of aquatic ecosystems on either side of the Canada-US border.

Set your sights on Planet Earth

The Biosphere is generally one of the most visited tourist attractions in the metropolis. This institution’s interest in our connection to the planet is obviously just as relevant today as when it was created a quarter of a century ago. The Biosphere receives regular accolades from the museum industry and is respected by the environmental community. In 2019, the Earth Day organization rightly acknowledged the Biosphere as one of the museums in the world that make the environment a priority. Visit for the first time or visit again!
