Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père
A breeze of history blows through Rimouski at the Site Historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père. Located about ten kilometers (6 miles) from downtown, on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, the historic site brings together three maritime attractions well suited for families. The Empress of Ireland Museum explores the story of the ocean liner and its 1914 sinking, the greatest maritime tragedy in Canadian history, through more than 300 artifacts and an immersive show. Visitors then board the Onondaga, a 90 metre submarine where an audio guide explains the daily life and complex work of submariners. The visit concludes at the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse, the second tallest in Québec, featuring an exhibition on the lighthouse keeper’s life and Saint-Lawrence pilots and a guided climb with sweeping views over Rimouski Bay.
