Opera takes over public spaces
Free outdoor activities are a focal point of the Festival’s programming, fulfilling its mission to make this art accessible to all. From July 23 to August 2, the Opera and Operetta brigades will take to Québec City’s parks with their castelet, giving short performances exuding humour and charm.
The Opera Circuit, which combines an urban stroll with operatic rest stops, takes audiences on an adventure to discover the jewels of the city’s religious heritage. These outdoor activities allow a wider audience to discover opera in a friendly and accessible setting.
Carmen, a masterpiece celebrating 150 years
A seminal piece by George Bizet, Carmen still strikes a strong chord today. On its 150th anniversary, the Festival pays tribute to this iconic opera, with a large-scale production featuring high-level soloists, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and the Opéra de Québec chorus.
Performed on July 30 and on August 1 and 3, this opéra comique (French opera containing spoken dialogue) takes audiences to the warmth of Spain to learn about the tragic fate of Carmen, a rebellious young woman who symbolizes the fire of seduction, the power of desire and the thirst for freedom.
Pieces that celebrate courage and resilience
The program for this 14th edition showcases bold artistic initiatives that testify to the Festival’s desire to make opera accessible to a wide audience.
Pierrot entre 3 lunes, an original and poetic piece, uses contemporary dance and opera to explore a world where identities are fluid. For young audiences, La chèvre de Monsieur Seguin combines elements of theatre and opera, evoking laughter, sadness and even chills. Finally, Souvenirs de Lakmé revisits the work of Léo Delibes through the private memories of a young woman in search of meaning and freedom.
