While vacationers can definitely take their time and relax, this corner of the Eastern Townships also lets them move, climb and taste. The region is overflowing with ideas for jam-packed days, as a couple or among friends. Here are three different ways to make the most of your stay.
Go hiking on the mountain at your own pace
In Sutton, hiking isn’t just an activity, it’s a way of life. Some of the trails at the Parc d’environnement naturel de Sutton reach just next to Cabin Sutton, with loops to suit any pair of legs. La Marmite aux sorcières (Witches’ Cauldron Trail), with its small waterfalls, barely takes any effort, perfect for an easy morning. Le Dos d’Orignal (Moose’s Back Trail), on the other hand, is 7.3km long and requires a little bit of preparation.
Taken together, the hiking trails in Brome-Missisquoi total more than 100km, spread out among 4 peaks and 4 mountain lakes. There’s something for every hiking fan, and you’re sure to leave with your calves strong and your spirit light! Find everything you’re looking for in a vacation here!
Mountain biking–for those seeking thrills or just getting started
Looking to get your adrenaline pumping? At Mount Sutton, mountain biking happens from mid-May to early November. You’ll find 47km of trails from calm cross-country to enduro where things get choppy, all developed and maintained by Plein air Sutton.
Spare your legs with a motorized lift up the mountain and focus on the fun of the descent. Almost one third of the trails are accessible to beginners, so it’s possible to get started there in a low-stakes environment. What’s more, a rental service, a school and workshops are available on site. No excuses not to take the first step!
Drink the terroir, one vineyard at a time
The Eastern Townships are also Quebec wine country. The Brome-Missisquoi Wine Route boasts 160 km of landscapes dotted with small valleys and 24 vineyards to discover from Sutton, to Dunham, Frelighsburg and Knowlton.
You’ll find grape-growing pioneers here, like Domaine du Ridge, as well as discoveries like Le Domaine Girouard, operating in Sutton Valley since 2016. For its part, the Château Sainte-Agnès Vineyard, with its cellars fit for a fortress and its rows planted on terraces, is worth a stop on its own.
And since you’re staying nearby, you’ll have plenty of time to dally in different places before returning to the comfort of your Cabin Sutton. After all, this region is best discovered by taking your time!
