Here's what you can expect when you visit Granby Zoo this winter!
See the dholes under the snowflakes
Have you ever heard of dholes? These Asian wild dogs have recently settled in at the Granby Zoo, and you'll be able to see them having fun in the snow for the first time since their arrival! Dholes can tolerate temperatures ranging from -49°C to +36°C, making them perfectly suited to Quebec’s climate. You'll find the 7 dholes (Berezi, Ushki, Tandoori, Sadie, Scarlet, Camkilo and Kimati) in their habitat which is reminiscent of the enchanting environment of Nepal.
The adult population of dholes is estimated at less than 2,500 individuals in the wild, and the species has lost nearly 75% of its original distribution range. By welcoming these endangered canids, the Granby Zoo hopes to participate in international conservation efforts for this unique species, notably with zoological institutions in the United States and Europe.
Find out if the animals prefer the cold or the heat
With close to 1,400 species in its care, the Granby Zoo is home to some animals who love the snow... and others that need things to be warm! And in the winter, you get to see both types. Several species, including the snow leopard, Japanese macaque and Bactrian camel, adapt wonderfully to sub-zero temperatures. On the other hand, a dozen indoor pavilions shelter species that are less tolerant to the cold. Rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses and multicolored parrots will be waiting for you inside while you take the opportunity to warm up and take a break from your tuques and mittens!
