In Quebec, people love to talk about the weather. But that can mean paying too much attention to the forecast when it comes to deciding what to do and where to go. Why not see it from a different perspective?

Understanding the forecast can actually be a way to stick to your plans and a tool to help you prepare well so that you can make the most of winter activities.
By taking weather factors into account and following a few tips, it's easier to enjoy the season instead of missing out, whether that’s during spring break, a family vacation or an activity you decide to do on the spot.
"Feels like" temperature: what does it really mean?
First of all, have you ever noticed that the apparent temperature isn't expressed in degrees Celsius, but only with a number? It refers to the sensation felt on skin exposed to wind and humidity and can vary depending on location, time of day, type of activity and even your clothing. That means the often-heard “feels like” in winter is not an absolute reality, but rather an index that takes into account the temperature, but above all, the wind. It is also important to note that the sensation can be different for each person depending on their acclimatization to a certain environment.
So think of the “feels like” temperature as a tool to decide how to dress rather than a piece of information that will influence your decision to do an activity or not.
How to dress in Quebec for a more pleasant time outside
Dressing in layers is an effective way to manage the cold, improve comfort and deal with constant changes in temperature.
Going for three layers is a good rule of thumb: first a layer that wicks away moisture, then a second layer that retains heat, and a third layer that protects against the elements and precipitation. Clothing should also be adapted to the conditions, how long you’ll be outside and the type of activity. In very cold or wet weather, waterproof boots, thermal underwear and warm accessories are a must. Finally, bringing along a change of clothes and heating pads can greatly improve comfort, especially on longer outings.
Another good tip: avoid dressing too warmly too early on. Instead put on the most insulating layers at the last second.
Tips on how to keep warm and make the most of winter
Needless to say, physical activity is one of the most effective ways to get your circulation going and generate heat. You could also bring a hot drink: a well-filled thermos will help you warm up and boost your energy levels. Also, remember to take breaks and locate heated areas (shelters, outdoor fireplaces or terraces with heat lamps) for when the cold becomes intense. Finally, even in winter, staying hydrated is essential: proper hydration helps the body regulate its temperature, which means less discomfort so you can enjoy your activities longer.
All that to say: weather shouldn’t be an excuse to stay home. Instead it can be a tool to help you better prepare. Different weather circumstances from those you'd hoped for can even have benefits: there could be less traffic, a better atmosphere and a unique experience. And bear in mind that by keeping your reservations, you're supporting passionate business owners dedicated to providing you with a wonderful experience.
Except in case of extreme weather, there’s always a good reason to go out and enjoy!
