Piracy in New France ⚓
Given its rich maritime history, it is not surprising that Quebec has had its share of episodes and characters linked to piracy!
Robert Chevalier, known as de Beauchêne, born on what is now the Island of Montreal, was a captain of buccaneers in New France. His incredible adventures inspired a 1732 novel by author Alain-René Lesage, and this colourful character also left his mark on popular culture: the 1993 Quebec film Matusalem was loosely based on his story.
Another example is Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and d'Ardillières, an illustrious 17th-century explorer and navigator born in New France who led fascinating conquests as a captain and privateer.
