From October 20, 2022 to April 23, 2023, the museum is proud to present a retrospective of Evergon, one of Canada's seminal photographers, who offers a playful, provocative and touching body of work of over 230 photographs! Theatres of the Intimate This major exhibition covers Evergon's entire career from 1971 to the present and features over 230 works brought together for the first time to showcase the work of this true Canadian cultural icon. Born in Niagara Falls in 1946, Evergon is a pioneer in both artistic and social terms. For nearly 50 years, this fearless artist has pursued a career marked by bold photographic, technological and aesthetic research. He has produced strong imagery, always moving, sometimes irreverent, often an extension of classical painting. Step into the burlesque, fleshy universe of Evergon Identity, body diversity, love, desire and aging are at the root of Evergon's work, which celebrates all facets of life, often with humour. The political and sensualistic nature of his work stirs up questions about sexual identity, as he revisits genres such as portraits, landscapes and nudes with rare vitality. Through collage, the art of photocopy, and a range of exploratory photographic approaches, including the Polaroid, Evergon explores the terms of queer masculine and feminine identity, shaking up overly fixed perceptions. A career shaped by bold works of art Evergon is world-renowned for his huge colour Polaroids from the 1980s. His award-winning holographic work has also been praised by critics and art institutions around the world. His touching series on his mother Margaret renews the representation of the aging body as few artists have done and has received widespread recognition.
