The work of this English painter, watercolourist and engraver will be presented as a Canadian exclusive at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ). Turner and the Sublime, showcasing the artist’s unique and modern take on landscapes, promises to deliver a range of emotions and to dazzle visitors with the works of this visionary, known as the “Painter of Light”. Explore the famous English master’s landscapes To help visitors better understand Turner, a pioneer of the romantic movement, the exhibition presents 77 paintings and works on paper created between the outset of his career in the 1790s to its peak around 1840. Admire masterpieces including Fishermen at Sea (1796), The Blue Rigi, Sunrise (1842) and Light and Colour (Goethe’s Theory) (1843), as well as an exquisite collection of watercolours. With Turner, the landscape is elevated to a major form of art: his mountains depict striking majesty, his marine scenes are a lyrical expression of nature and his skies are a window into the infinite. Experience the art of the sublime This exhibit is innovatively designed, based on the contrast between light and dark, to help visitors immerse themselves in the painter’s universe. Three never-before-seen video installations complete the presentation, offering you a contemporary experience of the sublime – the concept that was central to the aesthetic of the late 18th and 19th century in Europe and influenced by Philosopher Edmund Burke. An entire generation of artists, including Turner, drew from that concept of beauty based on the emotion felt in the presence of the forces of nature. Admire how Turner appropriated this notion through a variety of striking landscapes, awesome storms, tumultuous seas and impressive mountain views.
