Fishing for tomcod – a fish also commonly known as "frostfish" – is a unique winter experience that happens in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, located about two hours from Montreal. Every year, as soon as the ice sets in, a magical village of little cabins pops up and welcomes anglers of all ages, from late December to mid-February. Ice fishing is an extraordinary activity, accessible to all, even complete beginners. This winter, treat yourself to an escape from the city and a change of scenery and head to the Mauricie region to fish for tomcod!

A fun experience for families to enjoy

Fishing cabins come in a variety of sizes, some accommodating up to 25 people. This makes them ideal for families that choose to go fishing together. The cabins are heated by wood-burning stoves, creating an atmosphere typical of Quebec winters. And what about fishing techniques? No need to worry: the process is very simple, and the fish are voracious. You can be sure that kids will also enjoy this activity. All the equipment is provided on site, and you don’t even need a fishing license!

A bit about the tomcod

For about two months, Atlantic tomcod abound in the Sainte-Anne River, where they spawn. The tomcod is a white-fleshed fish part of the cod family, and the largest specimens can reach 12 inches. The quantity of flesh is small, but it is easy to catch large numbers of fish – and the tomcod population is thriving. So, not only will you go home with plenty of fish, you’ll also have great memories to share as well as a few recipes to try out.
