Tips and tricks for cycling families

Thinking of taking the family on a bike trip in Quebec this summer? Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure the best experience possible:

  • Before setting off on a very long bike ride with your family, test your equipment over a shorter distance and make sure that everything is in order: wheels properly inflated, helmets the right size, the right bike for everyone, travel bags secured, etc.

  • Smaller children will be better equipped for a long ride if they’re on a trailercycle, in a carrier or on a bike seat. Check which option is best for your child’s age and abilities.

  • Get the kids involved in choosing which roads to follow and where to take breaks.

  • Make sure to have a first aid kit and that you know how to use it.

  • Make sure you have repair kits and that you know how to use them in the event of a tire puncture or flat or other mechanical issue or damage.

  • Take note of where bike repair shops or stations are located on your route in case of a jam.

Did you know? In Quebec, cyclists have the right to use all roads except highways, onramps and exit ramps and certain prohibited bridges and tunnels. They must also follow most of the same traffic rules that apply to road vehicles.

Whether you’re planning a one-day family adventure or a long cycling trip for two, these businesses are a good place to start when planning your cycling getaway.

Have you considered renting a bike?

Major cities offer self-service rental and bike-sharing services with a variety of packages. Examples include the àVélo initiative in Québec City, BIXI in Montréal and in several parts of the Greater Montréal area, and the RÉGÎM, in Gaspésie and the Magdalen Islands.

Depending on your destination, look into businesses and organizations that offer bike rentals for visitors, for day trips or multi-day rides. A great option if you don’t want to lug your own bikes around.
