Hydro-Québec
The Rivière-des-Prairies hydroelectric generating station
Between the shores of Montreal and Laval, in the heart of the largest energy consumption area in Quebec, the Rivière-des-Prairies hydroelectric generating station is one of the oldest stations still in operation.
During your visit, you’ll have the chance to see inside the station, touch a real turbine wheel, and walk on its impressive 220-metre spillway. And don’t forget to check out the massive generating units, each weighing 110 tonnes (that’s the equivalent of 22 elephants!). Get ready to discover the power of water like never before!
As an extra treat, you’ll delve into the history of electrification in the metropolitan area and explore architecture influenced by the Art Deco style.
The Électrium
Curious minds of all ages can uncover the secrets of electricity and explore the fascinating world of electric and magnetic fields at the Électrium.
Located in Sainte-Julie, in the Montérégie region, this unique interpretation centre makes complex concepts easy to understand through interactive exhibits and guided tours. You can follow an electron’s journey from the generating station to your home, all while learning about voltage, circuits, renewable energy, and more.
Feeling courageous? Step up to the Van de Graaff generator and feel the effects of 400,000 volts of static electricity for a hair-raising experience you won’t want to miss!
The Lac-Mégantic microgrid
A life-size, living laboratory, the Lac-Mégantic microgrid in Estrie is the first and only one of its kind in Quebec. Inaugurated in 2021, the microgrid powers part of Lac-Mégantic’s new downtown area with 2,750 solar panels, storage batteries, smart devices, and a centralized control system.
During your visit, you’ll learn why these technologies are the future of energy production and consumption in Quebec. It’s a chance to see firsthand the innovations that will shape our energy future, all while soaking up the magnificent scenery of Lac-Mégantic!
